Nike also salutes Roger's 14 grand slam titles

I laughed even harder at this Nike commercial which someone posted on YouTube. And it features a cute ___--well, I'm not spoiling things so you better watch it yourself--whom I've never considered cute at all. Federer is ever so much more good-looking. Ha ha ha... [Oh, my mom's gonna kill me for this.]

NetJets Commercial pokes fun at Roger's trophy haul

I had a good laugh when I saw this ad which was aired by NBC right after match point at the Roland Garros men's finals last Sunday. It's obvious they taped this some time ago in anticipation of the great event. I hope they didn't have to wait too long to finally run it on television.

Laureus World Sportsman of the Year #4

World tennis number one Roger Federer dominated sports headlines worldwide yet again by being crowned the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award for the fourth year running!

Federer had already made history last year when he scooped up a third straight Laureus award. By collecting another award this year, the Swiss has become first man to win the award four times--in straight years no less!---since the awards, considered the Oscars of the sports world, were established in 1999. Only one other athlete had been named Sportsman of the Year in consective years (2000 and 2001): Federer's good friend Tiger Woods who is another giant in the world of sports and a nominee himself this year.

It was in fact a big night for tennis as other Laureus winners this year included Federer's fellow world tennis number one Justine Henin who was named World Sportswoman of the Year and wheelchair tennis legend Esther Vergeer who won the Laureus Disability Award for the second time.

The Swiss star who was on hand to receive the award during the star-studded ceremonies held in St. Petersburg, Russia yesterday thanked "all voters who didn't think three would be enough."

Indeed, given another amazing tennis season last year which saw him add another three grand slam titles--including a record-tying fifth straight Wimbledon title and a fourth straight US Open title--to his ever-growing haul of trophies and hold on to the year-end number one ranking for a fourth straight year, who could refuse the deserving tennis great one more accolade in recognition of such achievements?

Apparently four Laureus awards would not satisfy Federer himself as he told reporters afterwards, "I would like to win it again next year to have five in a row. I have five (successive) Wimbledon titles so it would be great to have five Laureus."

Long live King Roger the great!

New year, more awards

Clocks have barely chimed in the new year yet with true Swiss precision Federer has already even won more recognition for his achievements without missing a beat!

First, the French newspaper L'Equipe overwhelmingly named him 'Champion of Champions' and then the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) voted him the world’s 'Top Sporting Champion of the Year'. This is the third year in a row that the world number one has won both awards. He's truly a great champion.

Congratulations once again to the King of Tennis! What a great way to start a new year.

CNN's Play of the Year

I was watching CNN International's World Sport: Best of 2007 earlier this evening and, surprise! Federer's amazing between-the-legs shot during his match against Bracialli in the early rounds of Dubai Duty Free Open earlier this year was shown. CNN International had just named it World Sport's Play of the Year! Another perfectly wonderful way to end the year. All bow down to King Roger the Great!

Federer is one of GQ Men of the Year

The world number one has been recognized once more for his achievements on and off the court: he has been named one of the Men of the Year by GQ magazine for the year 2007. Included in the article about the Swiss tennis star is a tribute written by the legendary Bjorn Borg, and yet another stunning photo of Federer.

Honored along with the "Court King" are former US president Bill Clinton, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg, Pixar director and producer Brad Bird and several Hollywood stars including Tom Hanks, James McAvoy and Daniel Craig.

Federer misses out on 3rd Golden Bagel

David Ferrer, Federer's challenger for the recent Masters cup title, has just edged out the champion for this year's Golden Bagel Award™. Since both players were tied at seven "bagels apiece--that is, sets won to love--the winner had to be determined by counting the number of "fries" or "breadsticks" (6-1 sets) each had given out: Federer had fourteen "fries" while Ferrer had eighteen.

The award is given "all in good fun" by Side Spin Productions to the top eight player who hands out the most "bagels"during the season. Federer previously won the inaugural Golden Bagel Award™ in 2004 when he had twelve "bagels" and then again last year when he produced a whopping eighteen "bagels".

The Side Spin website now even includes the "bagel histories" of several past tennis greats like Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe.

ITF honours Federer for 2006

Federer was recognized as the the men's World Champion for 2006 by the International Tennis Federation during a dinner held in honour of other outstanding tennis players last Tuesday, 05 June. Last season, Federer won a total of 12 titles, had an amazing 92-5 win-loss record and extended his already huge lead at No. 1 in the rankings. Federer also had won the award for his accomplishments in 2004 and 2005.

However, it was John McEnroe, who received the Philippe Chatrier award, who bestowed the greater praise on Federer by saying during his acceptance speech that a French Open title this year would establish the current world tennis number one as the greatest ever to play the sport.

While I was gone...

I haven't posted in nearly two months, having been out of the country for a month's vacation. Before that, I was busy wrapping up things at work so that I could pass them on to whoever would be taking up my duties while I was gone.

Now that I'm back, quite a lot has happened since that last post about both Federer and Nadal getting into the finals at Monte Carlo:

  • Nothing new at that finals as Nadal won his third straight title at Monte Carlo 4-6 4-6.
  • Yet another honor was bestowed on Federer: he was named by TIME magazine as one of 100 most influential people in the world today. According to the magazine, these are the men and women "whose power, talent or moral example is transforming the world". The write-up about Federer who was classified under "Heroes and Pioneers" was penned by no less than tennis legend Rod Laver.
  • Then the Rome AMS was not kind at all to Federer when he lost in the third round to Filippo Volandri in straight sets 2-6 4-6. Oh well.
  • Federer unexpectedly split with Tony Roche, his part-time coach for two-and-a-half years, blaming a "lack of communication"--and not his recent slump--for the decision. Federer has stated that he intends to go it alone until at least Wimbledon this year.
  • Finally Federer made a very crucial breakthrough at the Hamburg AMS where he defeated Nadal at the finals to win a fourth title there. More importantly, he halted the clay court specialist's winning streak on clay at 81 matches! Way to go, Roger! Federer had a very poor start at the match, dropping the first set 1-6 before he came back in the second winning it 6-2. Better still, he won the deciding third set 6-0, another bagel from the prolific Federer's Bakery--and on Nadal's beloved clay no less! Loved the exciting rally with Nadal serving during the third set at 0-3, 15-0. One could see how much the win meant to him when he let out an almighty roar to celebrate match point. I also loved the scene where Mirka came down to courtside to congratulate her man. So sweet!

Federer to get a good licking

That is, as a one-franc postage stamp issued by the Swiss post, the first time a living person is depicted on a Swiss postage stamp. Hey, that's yet another first for our record-breaking champ! The stamp, bearing a photo of the Roger Federer holding up the Wimbledon winner's trophy when he won title for the fourth straight year--very appropriate, considering how the Swiss tennis superstar highly regards the prestigious Grand Slam event--was unveiled in Basel with Roger, accompanied by his proud parents and girlfriend, in attendance:

It's a great honour for me; I compare it to winning a Grand Slam such as Wimbledon. It's a big moment in my life.

Since Switzerland traditionally puts historical figures only on its stamps, the head of Swiss post, Ulrich Gygi, explained how they made an exception for Federer:

Up to now you had to do something big and then die before appearing on a stamp; we made an exception as Roger is truly exceptional. ... His personality, his charisma, his modesty and his influence are worth taking some liberties with customs going back to the 19th century. ... If you can come up with any Swiss personality who can equal Roger Federer's prestige, in any domain, I'm ready to follow you.

The brand new stamp can be purchased at all Swiss post offices, philatelic salepoints and online.

Now, this is one item--make that a dozen of these--that is definitely going onto my wish list along with the Feder-bear!

Laureus Sportsman of the Year hat-trick

Tennis' number one player, Roger Federer, has set yet another record: he has now become the first athlete to win three Laureus sports awards by winning the Sportsman of the Year award for the third straight year! This latest accolade is in recognition of another successful tennis season last year when he won another three grand slams, four Masters Series titles and the season-ending Masters Cup.

I'm so glad that the sports world has continued to acknowledge Roger's achievements on the court and his dominance in the world of tennis.

Federer though must have been busy with preparations for the clay season since he was not on hand to receive the award personally. Instead German tennis great Boris Becker--who said the prophetic words about Federer way back in July 2003, "We have seen the future--it arrived today,"--accepted the award on Federer's behalf and Roger's acceptance speech was projected on the giant screen during the awards ceremony.

Another round of congratulations to the great Roger Federer!

Federer wins 4 ATP awards

Our favourite tennis player, Roger Federer, is once again ATPTennis.com's Fan's Men's Singles Favorite (I voted for him, of course) and was awarded three other awards at the 2006 ATP Awards: Player of the Year, the Stephan Edberg Sportsmanship award and the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian award. More proof of how great this man is on and off the court. I'd say he practically swept the awards as that was all the ATP awards he could possibly win given what the rest of the awards were.

Other players who won awards are Bob and Mike Bryan (ATPTennis.com's Fan's Men's Doubles Favorite and Doubles Team of the Year), the young and upcoming Novak Djokovic (Most Improved Player), Agassi-conqueror Benjamin Becker (Newcomer of the Year) and Mardi Fish (Comeback Player of the Year).

Congratulations to Roger Federer and all of the other winners!!

Federer on Swiss postage stamp!

Federer will be honoured by the Swiss Post with the issue of a Roger Federer stamp this coming April to commemorate his breaking Jimmy Connor's record of 160 consecutive weeks ranked number one. I'd say that's definitely better than another cow or alp horn. I just wish I could travel to Europe to buy myself one. On second thought, what the heck? I'd buy a dozen!

Another record: 161 consecutive weeks at No. 1

Early this week Roger Federer celebrated his 161st consecutive week ranked number 1, in the process breaking Jimmy Connor's 30-year-old record. CONGRATULATIONS TO ROGER!!!

The ATP has a nice article congratulating Roger on its website and has put up a special photo gallery tribute. There are a few more related articles about Federer worth reading: one in the Belfast Telegraph , another in the New York Times and then the report from Reuters. Just scanning all the stats included in the articles sends shivers down my spine. If you think of it, when you combine what both Nadal and Roddick have achieved, they'd still be second behind Federer in the ATP rankings.

It's really scary what this great athlete has already achieved and I just can't imagine how far he can go in the years to come.

Ille mi par esse deo videtur. (He seems to me to be equal to a god.)
